On Sunday, Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) recorded 248 new cases of Covid-19 across 16 states and FCT with details as follows: ; 81-Lagos, 35-Jigawa, 26-Borno, 26-Kano, 20-Bauchi, 13-FCT, 12-Edo, 10-Sokoto, 7-Zamfara, 4-Kwara, 4-Kebbi, 2-Gombe, 2-Taraba, 2-Ogun, 2-Ekiti, 1-Osun, and 1-Bayelsa.
This brings the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Nigeria to 4,399. A total of 778 persons have been discharged with 143 deaths recorded as at 10 May, 2020. Additional 15 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, which represents 11.72% rise in death toll compared to 128 deaths recorded on 9 May, 2020.
Jigawa state recorded more new cases of Covid-19 than Kano, to place it as seventh state with the highest number of confirmed cases behind Katsina state. Ten states with the highest number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 are:
A total of 23,835 samples have been tested for Covid-19 in Nigeria, as at 21:39 GMT on Sunday according to the data available on NCDC website.
Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Africa, with about 17% rise in 48 hours. In Africa, confirmed Covid-19 cases stand at 61,165. A total of 20,932 recoveries have been recorded with 2,239 deaths as at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, according to the African Center for Disease Control. South Africa is still the country with the highest number of confirmed cases in Africa, with over 9,000 cases of Covid-19.
Northern Africa remains the worst affected region with over 21,000 confirmed cases. It is followed by Western region with over 18,000 confirmed cases.
In Kano, the state government has confirmed that 47 medical workers have tested positive for Covid-19 in the state, over the past few weeks. This was made known by Dr. Tijjani Hussain, the Coordinator, Kano State Taskforce on Covid-19 at a press conference in Kano on Sunday.
According to Dr. Hussain, out of 84 samples collected between Saturday and Sunday, 29 tested positive for covid-19. He sated that “so far we have collected 2,072 samples in the state”

In River State, criticism and confusion continues to trail the actions of the state Governor, Nyeson Wike in order to enforce the extreme lockdown orders he imposed on the state capital Port Harcourt
The governor had issued an order for the auction of the vehicles of the violators of the lockdown. This was seen by many people of the state as being too extreme and inhumane as people took to social media to voice their opinions.
However, on Sunday, people of Alode in Eleme town and Onne were thrown into despair as bulldozers began to demolish two hotels who were alleged to have violated the lockdown order.
In another development, 160 Nigerians, evacuated from the US, arrived the nations capital Abuja on Sunday. This follows the recent evacuation of Nigerians from United Arab Emirates and United Kingdom.
In Germany, the number of new cases has risen days after the country eased its lockdown measures. Last weekend, Germany began easing its lockdown measures to allow churches and businesses to open while observing social distancing measures. The country is the seventh country with highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases. It has recorded 144,400 recoveries and 7,560 deaths.
In south Korea, new lockdown measures have been imposed after the country witnessed a new wave on infections traced to a club. The country had largely brought the spread of the virus under control due to massive testing and contact tracing. South Korea has recorded 10,874 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with 9,160 recoveries and 256 deaths.
Chinese city of Wuhan announced it had detected its first case in weeks. Whereas a total 14 cases were announced in the whole of China. The highest number to be reported in ten days.
In Russia, the number of confirmed cases has passed 200,000. The country’s case has been on the increase since last week, recording over 10,000 new cases in 24hours consecutively. Russia’s total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases stands at 209,683 making it the fifth country with largest number of confirmed cases. However, the death has remained relatively small at 1,915.
Globally, there are 4,088,393 confirmed cases of Covid-19. However, experts have warned that the actual number of cases will be much more than that. 1,398,862 people have recovered globally with 281,893 deaths recorded as at 22:38 GMT on Sunday, according to John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.
