On Tuesday, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 146 new cases of Covid-19 across 19 states and FCT. This brigs the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 4,787. The new cases were recorded as follows: 57-Lagos, 27-Kano, 10-Kwara, 9-Edo, 8-Bauchi, 7-Yobe, 4-Kebbi, 4-Oyo, 3-Katsina, 3-Niger, 2-Plateau, 2-Borno, 2-Sokoto, 2-Benue, 1-Gombe, 1-Enugu, 1-Ebonyi, 1-Ogun, 1-FCT, and 1-Rivers.
In Nigeria, 959 persons have been discharged while 158 deaths have been recorded. That puts the mortality rate in Nigeria at 3.3% as at 12 May, 2020.
Total of 28,414 samples have been tested for Covid-19 since the out outbreak began according to the data on NCDC website.
Top ten states with highest confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Nigeria are:
Lagos state remains the epicenter of the outbreak in the country with 41.6% of all the confirmed cases. It is followed by Kano state with 14.5% of all the confirmed cases. The northern part of Nigeria still maintain – eight spots out of the top ten states with the highest number of confirmed cases in the country.
Coronavirus Update – Cases Continue to Rise in the North; Nigeria Records 242 new cases
Total of 67,957 cases have been confirmed in Africa, with 23,184 recoveries and 2,340 deaths recorded, according to the African Center for Disease Control. South Africa remains the country with highest number of cases. It has recorded 11,350 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 4,357 recoveries and 206 deaths.
North African region has the highest number cases of covid-19 in the continent. It has recorded 23,022 cases with 8,561 recoveries and 1,277 deaths. The worst affected country in the region is Egypt, which has 10,093 confirmed cases, representing 43.8% of the total cases in the region.
The second most affected region is West Africa, a total of 20,118 cases have been confirmed, with 5,742 recoveries and 417 deaths. Ghana has overtaken Nigeria as the country with highest number of confirmed cases in the region. Ghana has total of 5,127 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 494 recoveries. However, the number death in Ghana has remained very low, at 22.
Covid-19 deaths in Nigeria represents 36.4% of all deaths in the West African region as at 21:37GMT on Tuesday.
In Zimbabwe, a team of 12 Chinese doctors have arrived in the country, to help in the fight against Coronavirus. The southern Africa nation has confirmed 36 cases in total and 4 deaths.The doctors, from China’s Hunan Province, arrived in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, on Monday with test kits and protective gears.
The World Health Organization (WHO) in a tweet on Tuesday, said that nearly 1,000 health workers in the African region have been infected with Coronavirus with many of them being nurses. The organization said that “stakeholders must ensure that nurses have the supplies and equipment they need to deliver care safely. Nurses are essential in keeping communities healthy!”
In Russia, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday he has tested positive for the Coronavirus and is in hospital.
Peskov’s wife, Tatyana Navka, also tested positive for the virus. She told reporters that Peskov’s condition was “satisfactory” and that the couple decided to enter the hospital so as not to expose the rest of their family. According to Navka, her husband got the virus from work.
Dmitry Peskov is 52 years old and has been Putin’s spokesman since 2008 but began working him with in the early 2000s. He however said that he has not seen Putin in person in “more than a month ago.”
As the cases in Russia continued to rise, President Putin has minimized meetings and switched to holding daily video calls with cabinet members and aides.
Peskov is not the only Russian top government official to come down with the Coronavirus. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin revealed April 30 that he had tested positive for the virus. The next day, Construction and Housing Minister Vladimir Yakushev, was hospitalized with it, and Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova said last week she was self-isolating after getting infected.
Russia is now the second country with highest number of confirmed Covid-19 infections, after overtaking Spain to take a position behind The U.S. Russia has recorded 232,243 cases of Covid-19 with 43,513 recoveries. However, the number deaths from the virus has remained low at 2,116.
United Kingdom is the first in Europe and second in the world in terms of deaths from Covid-19. The country recorded 32,769 deaths from 227,737. Covid-19 death rate in the country is at 14.39%. although most of the deaths were recorded in care homes for the elderly.

China where the outbreak began in 2019, has said it will test all 11 million residents of Wuhan for covid-19 after authorities in Wuhan recorded six new cases over the weekend. Wuhan city reopened on 8 April after 76 days of strict lockdown. Wuhan had not reported any new cases since 3 April. China has asked all districts in Wuhan to submit details as to how testing could be done within 10 days.
China reported no new domestic infections on Tuesday. The north-eastern city of Shulan was placed under lockdown on Sunday, after another outbreak emerged there. Shulan borders Russia and North Korea,
Brazil has overtaken Germany to become the seventh country with highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases. Brazil has recorded 173,141 cases, with 67,384 recoveries and 12,065 deaths.
India is starting to reopen its economy with the interstate train allowed to operate from Tuesday. The country has recorded, 74,243 cases with 24,420 recoveries and 2,415 deaths.
The U.S remains the worst affected country in the world with 1,359,319 confirmed, 232,733 recoveries and 81,847 deaths.

The total global cases stands at 4,239,872 with 1,482,930 recoveries and 290,390 deaths according to John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center as at 21:42GMT on Tuesday.
