The Federal Executive Council approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University on Monday.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared this update with State House correspondents following the council’s final meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. Idris stated,
“The third item is that the Federal Executive Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja in honor of elder statesman General Yakubu Gowon. Therefore, the University of Abuja will henceforth be known as Yakubu Gowon University. The next steps will involve submitting the proposal to the National Assembly for the necessary legislative processes to officially change the university’s name.
The Federal Executive Council has made the decision to write to the National Assembly regarding this change.” Additionally, Idris announced that the council will go on recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
