The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has begun monitoring operations following an oil spill at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, known as SMI, located in Bonny, Rivers State. The spill was reportedly caused by a ruptured pipeline.
In response, SPDC swiftly shut down the affected pipeline to prevent any further leakage.
Additionally, containment booms have been deployed to limit the spread of oil and protect nearby communities from potential environmental hazards. Despite these containment efforts, the spill has reached the shoreline, raising concerns about its impact on the local ecosystem and livelihoods.
In response to the situation, NIMASA has activated its emergency operations center to monitor developments and coordinate an effective response. The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other key stakeholders to assess the scale of the spill and determine necessary remedial measures. NIMASA has reassured the public of its commitment to minimizing the environmental and social consequences of the spill.
