The Federal Government has assured the public that it is working to address the issues leading to the planned nationwide protest in order to maintain peace and stability in the country.
Groups and individuals have been organizing a nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 in response to the economic challenges faced in the country.
In response to this, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, held a closed-door meeting with ministers on Wednesday.
After the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the government is committed to resolving the issues at hand.
He emphasized that all parties involved are working for the greater good of Nigeria and expressed hope for the country’s progress.
Speaking after the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said no one would go to sleep among them until the issues were resolved.
He said, “We have discussed issues of national interest and all of us are working for Nigeria and we hope and believe that Nigeria is going to be great again.
“The planned protest is a family matter. All issues will be resolved in a way to ensures the peace and stability of the country. No one is going to sleep. Those who are agitating and asking for protests are Nigerians, they are our brothers, they are our sisters, they are all Nigerians and those in positions of authority; the ministers, the President, everybody, we are all Nigerians too. So, this is a family matter.
This is a Nigerian family issue and all of us are looking at this issue very well and we hope that peace will prevail at the end of the day.”
Idris mentioned that the government has been in discussions with stakeholders and organizers of the planned protest, with a focus on finding peaceful resolutions.
He also acknowledged the right of individuals, including prominent lawyer and activist Femi Falana, to express their opinions in a democratic society.
In response to those calling for the protest to go ahead, Idris emphasized the government’s plea for calm and patience. He conveyed the President’s message for citizens to remain calm and give the government more time to address their concerns.
The government’s intention is to work in the best interest of the nation and ensure that the needs and requests of the people are addressed.
