Explosives suspcted to be dynamites were detonated by suspected arsonists at the state secretariat of the main opposition political party in Rivers State, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Port Harcourt.
Buildings and other properties were shattered in the incident which occurred at the early hours of Saturday.
This comes as the local government elections is set to hold in the state today.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission had on Friday said that all sensitive materials have been distributed to the various local government areas.
A short video circulating on social media showed that the main gate and the security house of the APC secretariat as well as parts of an adjoining building were damaged by the explosion.
In a short message service (SMS) sent out to journalists in the State, the caretaker committee chairman of the party, Chief Tony Okocha, accused supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for the attack on the secretariat.
“At the wee hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office,” Okocha wrote.
“The second attempt to set it ablaze was foiled as the security at the gate quickly put out the fire.”
This is the second time the Chief Tony Okocha-led APC would be experiencing such an attack at its secretariat this year.
APC had earlier said it would not participate in today’s local government elections.
Similarly, the ruling party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Hon. Chukwuemeka Aaron, also said it would not participate in the election.
