Monday 14th June
Group D Scotland 0 – 2 Czech Republic (Glasgow)
Group E Poland 1 – 2 Slovakia (St Petersburg)
Group E Spain 0 – 0 Sweden (Seville)
The upsets are beginning to come. Slovakia, one of the underdogs of the tournament, defeated Poland 2-1 with the Polish team reduced to 10 men after Poland midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak got his second yellow card for a late challenge on Jakub Hromada which was swiftly followed by a red card.
The second upset was the draw between Spain and Sweden. One hopes Coach Luis Enrique has all it takes to justify his exclusion of experienced players, like Sergio Ramos, from the team. History has shown that a blend of experience and youth makes a formidable team. Time will either vindicate Enrique or nail him.
Another highlight is the new-wonder-of-the-world goal scored by Czech Republic’s Patrick Schick which he scored from a few meters after the center line. He saw the keeper off his line and pulled the trigger. He had tried that in the first half but was more precise at the second attempt. The goal is already up in contention for the best goal of the tournament and having scored twice, Schick might equally be up for the highest scorer award. It only depends on how far Czech Republic would go in the tournament.
