Share Share Share Share Send as Email

Final: 18th December 2022

Lionel Messi’s Argentina wins the Qatar 2022 World Cup

Play-off for third place: 17th December 2022

Morocco lost the third place match 1:2 to Croatia. The match was played at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Croatia took the lead in the 7th minute through a goal by Josko Gvardiol.  Achraf Dari equalized two minutes later, but Mislav Orsic restored Croatia’s lead in the 42nd minute.

Semi-finals: 14th December 2022

Morocco vs France – In what was already a successful world cup campaign even before the Referee blew the whistle to begin the second Semi-final match at Al Bayt Stadium, Morocco lost 2:0 to defending champions to bow out of the competition. An early withdrawal of their captain Romain Saiss didn’t help the case of the Atlas Lions. The Moroccans had beaten Belgium, Spain and Portugal to get to the Semi-finals, becoming the first nation from the African Continent to do so.

Two goals in both halves of the match scored by T. Hernandez in the 5th minute and Kolo Muani in the 79th minute sent France to the final. France could become the first nation since the revered Brazil side of 1962 to retain the trophy. It was the PSG man, Kylian Mbappe that provided both assists in the match.

Morocco will line up against Croatia in a play-off match for third place at the Khalifa International Stadium on 17th December, 2022.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, both forwards for PSG will lock horns in the final on Sunday 18th December, 2022 at the Lusail Stadium as Argentina take on France. Both nations will be vying to win their third world cup crown, with Argentina having won the 1978 (hosted by Argentina) and 1986 tournaments, while France won 1998 (hosted by France) and 2018.

Semi-finals: 13th December 2022

Argentina vs Croatia – It was a case of Messi masterpiece and Alvarez goals at the first Semi-final match at Lusail Stadium. Argentina progressed to the finals with a 3:0 win over L. Modric’s Croatia.

The dream that appeared to be going up in smoke when Saudi Arabia inflicted the shock of this FIFA World Cup is not only alive, it is 90 minutes from becoming reality. Lionel Messi is one match from crowning an extraordinary career with the prize he yearns the most.

Messi scored the first goal from the penalty spot in the 34th minute, and drew level with France’s Kylian Mbappe on five goals in the Golden Boot tussle. The penalty was won by Alvarez, when the Croatian goalkeeper brought him down after he toed the ball past the keeper.

Julian Alvarez scored the second goal in the 39th minute for Argentina, having taken a pass from Lionel Messi at the center of the field, he ran towards the opposition goal post, luck smiled on him as the ball came off two Croatian defenders and was served to him to poke the ball past the Croatian goalkeeper.

Lionel Messi then provided a masterpiece, evading the Croatian defender to pass the ball to Alvarez, who made no mistake slotting the ball into the net for the third goal in the 69th minute.

10th December 2022

Morocco vs Portugal – Morocco pulled off the unexpected to beat Portugal 1:0 and advance to the Semi-finals. By so doing, Morocco became the first African country to play in the semi-final of a world cup.

England vs France – The defending champions advanced to the semi-finals with a 2:1 victory over England, and continue their quest to become the first country to defend the trophy in 60 years. Aurelien Tchouameni put the French ahead in the 17th minute, and then gave away a penalty that allowed Harry Kane equalize of England in the 54th minute. France’s all time highest goal scorer Olivier Giroud put the French ahead again in the 78th minute. T. Hernandez gave away another penalty, but this time Harry Kane ballooned the ball over the cross bar.

France will play Morocco in  the second semi-final match for a place in the finals on 14th December, 2022 at Al Bayt Stadium.

9th December 2022

Croatia vs Brazil – Brazil suffered a shock loss to Croatia in the first quarter final match played at the Education City Stadium on Friday. Neymar scored the first goal of the match in the last minute of the first half of extra time. Bruno Petkovic equalized for Croatia in the 117th minute of the match, to send the match to penalties.  Croatia won the penalty shot-out 4-2, with all their first penalty takers scored (Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Majer, Luka Modric and Mislav Orsic). Rodrygo missed the first penalty for Brazil, followed by Casemiro and Pedro who both scored, before Marquinhos hit the goal post.

Netherlands vs Argentina – The second quarter finals match at Lusail Stadium also ended on penalties, with Argentina progressing to the Semi-finals. Messi assisted Molina to score the first goal in the 35th minute, and scored the second from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute. Wout Weghorst came off the bench to score twice to level the game and send it to Penalties. Argentina won the penalty shoot-out 4:3.

Argentina will play Croatia in the first Semi-final match on 13th December, 2022 at Lusail Stadium.

6th December 2022

Morocco vs Spain – Morocco defeated 2010 World Champions Spain on penalties at Education City Stadium to advance to the Quarter-final for the first time in their history. The Atlas lions held off a relentless Spanish pressure to achieve a 0:0 draw after extra times.

Portugal vs Switzerland – 2006 semi-finalist brushed aside Switzerland with a 6:1 thrashing at the Lusail Stadium. The highlight of the match was a hattrick by Goncalo Ramos, who scored in the 17th, 51th and 67th. The Benfica forward started the match in place of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Morocco will play Portugal on Saturday for a place in the Semi-final.

5th December, 2022

2nd December, 2022

Teams that ADVANCED to Round of 16

GROUP A

Netherlands: With 2 wins and 1 draw, Netherlands advanced as group leaders with 7 points.

Senegal: The Teranga lions snatched an important win 2:1 over Ecuador to advance to the next round. They took 6 points from 3 games, with wins over Qatar and Ecuador.

GROUP B

England – 2 wins and a draw delivered 7 points for the Three Lions and a top of the table finish in the group.

USA – 5 points gotten from draws against Wales and then England, plus a victory against Iran on their last group match handed the USA team a second position finish on the table and a pass to the round of 16.

GROUP C

Argentina – The South Americans shrugged off their opening match defeat to Saudi Arabia to top the group, thanks to 2:0 wins against Mexico and Poland.

Poland – Lewandoski’s Poland barely made it to the round of 16. They beat Mexico to second position despite suffering a defeat at the hands of Argentina in the last match of the group due to goal difference.

GROUP D

France –  The defending Champions had booked their place in the Round of 16, with a 2:1 victory over Denmark in their second Group D match at Stadium 974. They lost 1:0 to Tunisia having made 9 changes to their team to still finish top of the table with 6 points and +3 goal difference.

Australia – Australia stunned Denmark with a 1:0, to join France on 6 points and qualified for the round of 16 in second position, with a -1 goal difference.

GROUP E

Japan – Japan started their world cup campaign with a surprise victory over 4 times champion, Germany. They then suffered an unexpected defeat in the hands of Costa Rica. They then closed off the group stages with a victory over Spain on Thursday to  win the group with 6 points.

Spain – The 2010 world champions had to fall back on their 7:0 victory over Costa Rica in the first match to secure a place in the round of 16 as they progressed on goa difference, having finished with 4 points.

GROUP F

Morocco – The Atlas lions of Morocco pulled off a sensational finish in Group F, topping the group with 7 points from two victories and one draw.

Croatia – 2018 runners up booked their place in the round of 16 next to Morocco, finishing on 5 points. They Croatians won their match against Canada and drew against Morocco and Belgium.

GROUP G

Brazil –  A lone goal by Casemiro gave Brazil a 1:0 win over Switzerland on Matchday 2 in Group G, and confirmed their place in the round of 16. Brazil topped the group with 6 points, despite a 0:1 defeat to Cameroon.

Switzerland – Two wins and one defeat earned Switzerland 6 points and a place in the round of 16.

GROUP H

Portugal –  A Bruno Fernandes double gave Portugal a 2 goals to nothing victory over Uruguay in the second match and ensured their place in the last 16. Despite a 1:2 loss to South Korea, Portugal still progressed as group winners with 6 points.

South Korea – A heartbroken Korean team at the end of the match with Ghana came from behind to beat Portugal, and snatch the second position with 4 points. With more goals scored, South Korea progressed to the next round ahead of Uruguay.

Teams that has been ELIMINATED

GROUP A

Qatar – The host country was eliminated from the competition when they lost 1:3 to Senegal in their second Group A match at Al Thumama Stadium. The host country had lost 2:0 in the opening match of the competition against Ecuador. Having seen their exit confirmed before the last game, Qatar went on to lose 0:2 to Netherlands, thus staying rooted at the bottom of the table with zero points, 1 goal in favour and 7 goals against.

Ecuador – Despite a victorious start to their campaign, winning their first match against Qatar, and drawing against Netherlands, Ecuador lost to Senegal to finish third in the group with four points.

GROUP B

Wales – The welsh team began their campaign with a late equalizer to snatch a draw against USA, but lost to Iran in the second match, and suffered a 3:0 defeat to England to occupy the bottom position in the group with solitary point.

Iran – A draw would have been sufficient for the Islamic Republic of Iran to advance to the next round in their game against USA, but they came short, losing 1:0 on the night. They end their campaign with 3 points, having lost to England and USA, and won against Wales.

GROUP C

Saudi Arabia – Despite creating an upset in their first match by beating Messi’s Argentina, the Saudi’s suffered back to back defeats in their next to games against Poland and Mexico. They finished bottom of the group with 3 points.

Mexico – The Mexicans came into the competition with aspirations to break their round of 16 jinx, but failed to make it to the round of 16. They bow out of Qatar with 4 points and -1 goal difference.

GROUP D

Denmark – The Danes’ performance in the world cup was below par as they finished bottom of Group D with only 1 point. They were pre-tournament favourites to qualify from the group, alongside France.

Tunisia – A loss, a draw and a win was not sufficient to see Tunisia through to the next round, as they finished third of the group with 3 points.

GROUP E

Costa Rica –  Fresh from their victory over Japan, Costa Rica needed a win to make it to the next round. Despite leading 2:1 at some point in the match against Germany, they eventually succumbed to a 4:2 defeat to Germany. Costa Rica finished bottom of the group with 3 points.

Germany – A loss, a draw, and a win gave Germany 4 points on the board, but not sufficient to overtake Spain on the table due to inferior goal difference.

GROUP F
