Senate invites CBN Governor over Cryptocurrency ban

The Senate on Thursday passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill amid division on the electronic transmission of election results.

The Senate stripped INEC of its independency in determining how election results would be transmitted, in a vote that was cast along party line.

A report by the Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had suggested that “The Commission (INEC) may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable.”

However, during consideration of the report, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC Niger North), amended this suggestion to read, “The Commission may consider electronic transmission of results, provided the national coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secure by the National Communications Commission (NCC) and approved by the National Assembly.”

Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) seconded Senator Abdullahi’s motion, with disagreement erupting from some senators.

Senate minority leader Enyinnanya Abaribe (PDP, Abia South) then called for public voting saying the process would allow Nigerians to know how each senator voted.

Total of 80 senators cast their vote. 28 senators, all from the PDP voted for the original clause in the report while 52 senators, all from the APC voted for the amendment as proposed by Senator Abdullahi, according to Channels Tv.

Ironically, the Chairman of Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya who presented the report with original provision of clause 52(3), voted against it.

28 senators were absent from the start of the physical voting including all the three Senators from Anambra and Ogun states. Also, two out of the three senators from Oyo State were not in the chamber before the commencement of voting.
