The Federal Government of Nigeria on Saturday ordered that the selection of the Special Works Program beneficiaries should not be based only on the indigenes a Local Government Area (LGA) alone, but should also consider the residents of the LGA “irrespective of the tribe.”
The order to include both residents in the selection of the 1,000 beneficiaries from each of the 774 LGA in Nigeria, was issued by the Minister of State, Labour & Employment Festus Keyamo via a tweet on Sunday on his official Twitter account.
The minster said that consideration of only LGA indigenes is “unacceptable” and that the selection committees should consider both indigenes and residents of the LGA regardless of the tribe.

The Special Woks Programme which is under the National Directorate of Employment is tailored for the “illiterates and unskilled workers” according to the minister during its inauguration.

As approved by President, Muhammadu Buhari, 1,000 persons will be employed from each of the 774 LGA in Nigeria, for temporary employment during the dry season. This would amount to a total of 774,000 persons.
The employment period is 3 months and was expected to begin on 1 October this year.
Participants were to be paid an allowance of N20,000 monthly and were to be recruited largely from the pool of unskilled persons ordinarily resident in those rural areas
