On September 28, 2025, Nigeria’s Federal Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, called an urgent meeting with PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery for Monday, September 29, to avert a nationwide strike.
The dispute stems from alleged mass sackings of PENGASSAN members at the refinery for unionising, prompting the union to plan industrial action that could disrupt fuel supply.
According to Dingyadi, the Ministry has initiated steps to prevent the dispute from escalating by bringing the parties to the negotiation table. Invitations, he said, have already been extended to the leadership of PENGASSAN and the management of Dangote Refinery to attend a conciliation session in his office.
“I appeal to both parties to be mindful of the importance of the petroleum sector to the country, being the core of its economy. A strike will not only lead to heavy revenue losses by the country but also cause more hardship and difficulties for Nigerians,” the Minister warned. “Consequently, it will have adverse impacts, both on economic stability and national security.”
Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi urged both parties to suspend the strike and engage in dialogue to protect workers’ rights and national stability. The talks follow earlier tensions with NUPENG over similar labour issues.
A strike risks fuel shortages and economic fallout, with social media amplifying the crisis. Outcomes will be closely watched.
