An engine boat carrying 85 passengers has capsized in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra state, with only nine passengers rescued while the rest reportedly drowned.
Investogist gathered that the boat whose passengers comprised of traders and flood victims who were relocating to safer areas capsized around 9am on Friday.
It was said that the boat broke down near Onukwu Bridge at Umunankwo, while ferrying the passengers from Ossomala to Nkwo Ogbakuba market.
The Anambra State Coordinator, Local Emergency Management Committee, Mr. Nnamdi Esimai, told Channels Television that the bodies of the victims were yet to be recovered from the water since it would take a day before the bodies could float.
Esimai said efforts were ongoing to recover the bodies, noting that the use of life jackets must be encouraged among the riverine people for safety at all times.
