As Tokyo Olympics which began on Friday, July 23, 2021 came to an today, several records were broken with new records created.
Although it was delayed by a year due to Covid-19 pandemic, athletes were in the end cheered by mostly empty seats.
The USA finished top of the medal table in both categories of Gold medals and total number of medals won, with 39 Gold medals and 113 medals in total.
Nevertheless, the USA underperformed compared to Rio 2016, where the country won 46 God medals and 121 medals in total.
The USA was followed by China with 38 Gold medals and 88 medals in total in the Tokyo Games. However, China beat its own Rio record, where the country won 26 Gold medals and 71 medals in total.
In Tokyo Olympics, the host, Japan came in third with 27 Gold medals and a total of 58 medals. Japan also beat its Rio record of 12 Gold medals and 41 medals in total.
Great Britain ranked fourth with 22 Gold medals and 65 medals in total. This is however below its Rio winnings of 27 Gold medals and 67 medals in total.
ROC ranked fifth with 20 Gold medals and 71 medals in total in Tokyo. Russian athletes competed as Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) because Russia was barred from officially competing in the Tokyo games due to doping scandal.

Other countries that won Gold medal in the games include Tunisia (1), Kenya (4), Uganda (2), Ecuador (2), Iran (3), Hungary (6), Kosovo (2), South Africa (1), Philippines (1), Jamaica (4), Slovenia (3), Austria (1), Bermuda (1) among others.
Nigeria won two medals in Tokyo – silver and bronze, with Ese Brume winning bronze, the country’s first medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Whereas Blessing Oborududu won a silver medal in women’s 68kg freestyle event.
Ironically Nigeria performed better in Tokyo than it did in Rio in 2016 where the coutry won only 1 bronze medal.
