The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) warned Nigerians about the risks associated with substandard and unregistered sugar products, including smuggled brands from Brazil such as Grupo Moreno and Alvean.
FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaje Ijagwu stated that these products fail to meet mandatory Vitamin A fortification requirements, which can lead to serious health risks like blindness and increased susceptibility to infections, especially in vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. Ijagwu highlighted that these substandard products undermine the local sugar industry, manipulate prices, and harm honest producers.
Many lack proper labeling, including production and expiry dates, and NAFDAC registration, complicating enforcement efforts amid smuggling through porous borders.
The FCCPC is taking steps to address this issue and is committed to educating consumers about the dangers of non-fortified sugar products.
Consumers are urged to verify that sugar products have proper labeling and evidence of Vitamin A fortification.
