Enyimba International FC on Sunday won the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League, after 1-1 draw against the defending champions, Rivers United in the last game of the NPFL Super 6 playoffs in Lagos.
The two-time African champions finished the playoffs at nine points with Remo Stars and Rivers United.
However, they claimed their ninth league title with a goal difference, taking home the prize money of N100 million, the highest ever paid in the league.
Ekene Awazie, former Remo Stars player opened scoring with Enyimba’s only in the 40th minute but Nyima Nwagua restored parity for the holders early in the second half.
This is Enyimba’s first NPFL title in four years.
Rivers United, who needed a win to claim the title, finished third behind Remo Stars due to goal difference needed a win to retain their title.
Enyimba and Remo will play in the CAF Champions League while Rivers United earned a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The People’s Elephant won their first NPFL title in 2001 and went on to win the 2002 2003 titles. They won again in 2005 and 2006 before adding the sixth and seventh in 2010 and 2015 respectively. They won their eight NPFL title in 2019.
