The Federal Government has approved a uniform registration fee of N50,000 for candidates sitting the WAEC and NECO Senior School Certificate Examinations, effective from 2027.
The decision is contained in a memo signed by Adeniji Ibrahim, Director of Senior Secondary Education, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, directing the WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform fee.
The new rate marks an 82% jump from the previous N27,500.
NECO’s SSCE internal fee rises from N30,000 to N50,000, while WAEC’s increases from N27,000 to N50,000.
The hike has drawn mixed reactions. Critics warn it will deepen financial pressure on parents and could push students out of school, while some stakeholders argue increased funding could strengthen certificate verification and digital infrastructure if managed transparently.
