President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of all police officers attached to VIPs and unauthorised persons in Nigeria.
The officers, estimated at over 100,000, will be redeployed to police stations, highways, and communities for core policing duties. VIPs in need of armed protection must now apply to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
In addition, the President approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers and pledged to upgrade training facilities.
The directive, announced after a security meeting with service chiefs, aims to boost police presence where Nigerians need it most and end the long-standing misuse of officers as private guards.
Implementation begins immediately.
