Meta has announced a new set of smart glasses that use AI at its yearly Connect 2025 event. In partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the company introduced the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, Meta Oakley Vanguard, and the new Ray-Ban Meta Display (also called Hypernova), showing that augmented reality could be the next big thing.
The second generation of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses is an updated version of Meta’s popular smart glasses, which now includes upgraded 3K video capture, with upcoming slow-motion and hyperlapse modes set for a fall update. An improved audio new “conversation focus” mode enhances clarity in noisy environments, perfect for hands-free calls or in-person chats. New colour options and extended battery life make these glasses a stylish, practical choice for everyday use. Priced starting at $379, and $299 for older models, with the Display model expected later this year.
The Meta Oakley Vanguard is targeted for athletes, HSTN (launched June 2025), as a performance-driven line.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized during the keynote that 2025 will be a defining year for smart glasses, positioning them as a potential phone replacement in the near future.
The Ray-Ban Meta glasses have seen soaring sales, bolstered by discounts of up to 50% on select styles and new limited-edition designs, like matte transparent frames with Transitions Ruby lenses. However, competition is heating up, with Samsung’s smart glasses slated for 2026 and HTC entering the fray. Meta has also addressed privacy concerns, with updates ensuring recording indicators cannot be bypassed.
Meta’s latest releases and updates underscore its commitment to making smart glasses a cornerstone of everyday tech. From aiding the visually impaired to offering athletes real-time insights and paving the way for AR, these devices are more than just accessories—they’re a glimpse into a future where AI and AR blend seamlessly into our lives.
