Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has commiserated with traders who lost their properties in a fire outbreak that devastated shops and goods at the popular Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan during the early hours of Wednesday. The governor’s message was conveyed by Deputy Governor Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, who visited the site to assess the damage.
According to a statement from Makinde’s media aide, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor assured victims that the government would evaluate the extent of the damage and provide immediate support once a full report on the incident is available.
He directed the Ibadan South-West Local Government and the Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to implement adequate security measures at the market and prepare a comprehensive report on the fire’s cause. He also urged market leaders to account for the number of shops affected. “On behalf of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, I have come here today to sympathize with you over this unfortunate incident.
We are grateful that no lives were lost,” said Lawal. “This is a significant and well-known market, and the loss is deeply painful. Please be assured that the government will take necessary actions to provide immediate assistance. We hope that such incidents do not occur again.
“This fire incident is particularly tragic, considering that this market has long been a place where many have conducted their business peacefully. “As the government, we are here to empathize and assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire. We have interacted with the market vendors and noted that the fire spread rapidly due to the nature of the trade involved (plastic goods).
Thankfully, no lives were lost. “We will take prompt action to provide immediate support through the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (Oyo SEMA). We will also collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other community-minded individuals to assist the victims of this incident. “We await a comprehensive report detailing the fire’s cause and the level of losses incurred.
This market is vital to commercial activities in Oyo State, attracting traders from Benin Republic, Ivory Coast, and Niger Republic. The state government is committed to providing assistance.” Reports has it that the fire began around 9 PM on Tuesday, affecting the Plastic Merchants section of the market and disrupting the livelihoods of many traders.
