The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained for over a year, is worried about the fate of political detainees in Nigeria, including Hausa and Fulani, according to the leader of his legal team, Ifeanyi Ejiofor.
Ejiofor said this in a statement issued Thursday evening after his routine visit to Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
He said that “instructions were equally taken in that regard, and we are going to swing into serious legal actions to ensure that those concerned regain their freeom [sic].”
Ejiofor’s statement read: “UPDATE ON OUR ROUTINE VISIT TO OUR INDEFATIGABLE CLIENT – ONYENDU MAZI NNAMDI KANU AT THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE SERVICES (DSS) ABUJA, TODAY, BEING THE 18TH DAY OF AUGUST, 2022:
“The Court-Ordered routine visit to our indefatigable Client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was conducted today, at the DSS Headquarters Abuja, where Onyendu is being held in solitary confinement for over 13 months now.
“In line with the new guideline introduced by the DSS, albeit, still in flagrant violation of the Court’s guideline, routine visits to Onyendu is still being conducted separately with time apportioned for each person.
“I first met with Onyendu and the opportunity afforded an exclusive heart-to-heart discussion with him. I briefed him on the status of all the filings in our Appeal coming up on the 11th of October 2022, for definite Hearing. Onyendu was also informed that all Court processes are now before the Court of Appeal, setting a fertile stage for an overripe legal fireworks on that day. However, further details on the subject remains private, but we can assure you all, that it will be an interesting argument come 11th October, 2022.
“Onyendu was also briefed on the other pending Court actions affecting UmuChineke still being held in various detention facilities across Nigeria. He was satisfied with the level of progress in each of the individual cases.
“Onyendu can never change, even in solitary confinement, he is deeply worried about the fate of other detainees, including those of different ethnic extractions who are mainly Hausas, Fulanis and others, presently languishing in custody. Instructions were equally taken in that regard, and we are going to swing into serious legal actions to ensure that those concerned regain their freeom.
“Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is truly a liberator, and a gift to humanity, whom everyone, regardless of ethnic affiliation, should be proud of. May the Almighty Chukwuokike Abiama continue to bless Onyendu for his kind heart.
“Onyendu also reiterated his confidence in those steering the ship on his behalf and implored everyone to give them the maximum cooperation needed for maximum output.
“Onyendu further extended his warm greetings, regards and love to you all, UmuChineke, and emphatically admonished for continued peaceful coexistence.
“Onyendu is profoundly enthused by the level of calmness and peaceful environment presently being enjoyed in the entire South-East, he encouraged every stakeholder particularly UmuChineke, never to relent in giving their best to sustain the tempo.
