Toyota Motor North America has announced a safety recall of about 1,500 model year 2020-2022 Toyota Supra vehicles in the United States due to a potential fire hazard linked to the engine starter component.
The issue affects certain 4-cylinder Supra models, where water entering the engine starter can cause corrosion. This may lead to a short circuit, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire during operation or when the vehicle is parked with the ignition off. Toyota and BMW, the Supra’s platform partner, have identified this as a critical safety concern.
Toyota dealers will replace the affected starter with an improved, water-resistant version at no cost to owners. The repair is expected to take one to two hours. Until then, Toyota advises owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures to reduce fire risk.
Toyota will begin notifying affected owners by mail in late November 2025, providing instructions on how to schedule the free repair. Dealers are preparing to offer the remedy as early as November 2025. Owners can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on Toyota’s official recall website (toyota.com/recall) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall portal (nhtsa.gov/recalls).
Owners of affected Supra models are urged to act promptly once notifications are issued. In the meantime, those who suspect issues with their vehicle’s starter or have experienced related problems can file a complaint with NHTSA. This recall is separate from Toyota’s larger recalls earlier this month, which involved over 591,000 vehicles for instrument panel failures.
