The Nigerian Exchange’s equities market that opened in a somber mood appreciated by 0.18% on Monday.
The market opened for trading on Monday with the country still reeling from the shock and sadness over the deaths of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, CFR, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Access Holdings Plc (NGX: ACCESSCORP) and Otunba Abimbola Ogunbanjo, OFR, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Beta Glass Plc (NGX: BETAGLAS).

Both men along with the Dr. Wigwe’s Wife and Elder Son died in a helicopter crash in Souter California, USA, on Friday night.
At the end of trading on Monday, the share price of ACCESSCORP depreciated by 6.26% to close at ₦23.20, while the share price of BETAGLAS closed flat at ₦59.40.
The benchmark All-Share Index (NGX ASI) appreciated by 0.18% to close at 102,042.32 points, with year-to-date gains growing to 36.47%.
The market capitalization also appreciated by 0.18%, adding ₦101 billion to Investors’ wealth to close at ₦55.836 trillion.
Activity Level
The activity level waned on Monday as all of volume, value of shares traded and the number of deals decreased.
The volume of shares and value of shares traded decreased by 24.67% and 30.31% respectively, while the number of deals done also decreased by 2.35%.
At the end of trading, 242.43 million shares valued at ₦5.12 billion had exchanged hands in 8,715 deals.
Shares of Access Holdings Plc (NGX: ACCESSCORP), Veritas Kapital Assurance Plc (NGX: VERITASKAP), and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (NGX: GTCO) were the most traded stocks by volume with 24.89 million, 24.18 million and 21.17 million shares respectively.
Shares of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (NGX: GTCO), Geregu Power Plc (NGX: GEREGU) and Access Holdings Plc (NGX: ACCESSCORP) were the most traded by value, with their shares worth ₦841.25 million, ₦802.71 million and ₦575.10 million respectively exchanging hands.
Top gainers and losers
In the day’s trading session, 32 stocks advanced against 23 decliners.
The top five gainers were;
- NCR (Nigeria) Plc (NGX: NCR): It gained 10% to close at ₦4.40.
- Royal Exchange Plc (NGX: ROYALEX): It gained 10% to close at ₦0.77.
- Chams Plc (NGX: CHAMS): It gained 10% to close at ₦0.2.75.
- Sunu Assurances Nigeria Plc (NGX: SUNUASSUR): It gained 9.50% to close at ₦1.96.
- The Initiates Plc (NGX: TIP): It gained 9.43% to close at ₦2.32.
The top five losers were;
- Infinity Trust Mortgage Bank Plc (NGX: INFINITY): It lost 9.90% to close at ₦7.19.
- John Holt Plc (NGX: JOHNHOLT): It lost 9.88% to close at ₦2.19
- PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc (NGX: PZ): It lost 9.87% to close at ₦9.87.
- May & Baker Plc (NGX: MAYBAKER): It lost 9.8% to close at ₦6.35.
- Deap Capital Management & Trust Plc (NGX: DEAPCAP): It lost 7.14% to close at ₦0.65.
Three of the five indices under our watch advanced, while two declined.
- Banking Index: The index lost 0.88% to close at 900.68 points (YTD: +0.39%).
- Industrial Index: The industrial index lost 0.07% to close at 5,426.98 points (YTD: +100.09%).
- Consumer Goods Index: The index gained 0.60% to 1,487.05 points (YTD: +30.89%).
- Oil & Gas Index: It gained 0.15% to close at 1,248.47 points (YTD: +19.69%).
- Insurance Index: The index gained 2.30% to close at 420.93 points (YTD: +30.86%).
