The Super Eagles of Nigeria earlier today qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Cameroon in January, 2022. The Eagles qualified with two games to spare. This came at the heels of results in far away Lesotho where Sierra Leone held Lesotho to a scoreless draw. With that result, Nigeria maintained an unassailable lead with 8 points while waiting to kick off their match with Benin Republic later same day.
At the end of the match with the Squirrels of Benin Republic, which commenced by 5pm Nigerian time, the Super Eagles were victorious with a lone goal from Paul Onuachu in the 3rd minute of extra time after full time (93rd minute). That victory has increased Nigeria’s points to 11 with the defeated Squirrels second on 7 points. Sierra Leone sits on third with 4 points while Lesotho blazes the trail with 3 points from 5 matches.
The last round of the group qualifiers for Group L comes up on Tuesday, 30th March, 2021 with Nigeria hosting Lesotho while Sierra Leone plays host to Benin Republic. These two matches will be played simultaneously by 5pm Nigerian time. The match between Sierra Leone and Benin Republic promises to be the match of the day as the two teams battle for the second qualification slot.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles victory over the Squirrels of Benin Republic at the Charles de Gaulle stadium, Porto Novo, has ended an 8-year unbeaten home record held by the Squirrels. The Eagles last beat the Squirrels on home soil in 2013.
