Tansian University is mourning the sudden passing of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nnamdi Umeoduagu, just a day after he was sworn in as the official head of the institution.
Professor Umeoduagu, 44, was inaugurated on Friday, 2 October 2026, and died on Saturday, 3 October.
A university official, Mr Nwakwesili, confirmed the news, stating that the professor was sworn in on Friday and passed away the following day.
Reports suggest that he fell ill shortly after the inauguration. The university has not officially disclosed the cause of death, and an investigation along with an autopsy are reportedly underway.
Before his confirmation, Professor Umeoduagu served as acting Vice-Chancellor for about two months.
He assumed the role when his predecessor, Professor Eugene Nwadialor, went on medical leave, and he remained in the position until Professor Nwadialor’s tenure expired on 30 September.
A microbiologist, he held several positions at the university, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). He also previously represented Aguata 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
His appointment followed a prolonged leadership crisis at the university.
The university has announced a two-week period of mourning. In a statement, management described his death as an immense loss to the university community, his family, colleagues, students, and the wider academic circle in Nigeria.
Management also responded to media reports claiming he served as acting Vice-Chancellor for only two days before his death.
