Benjamin Netanyahu has lost his 12-year hold on power as a new coalition government gets Israeli’s parliament approval.
This comes after a political crisis that sparked four elections in two years.
Naftali Bennett of the Yamina party was sworn in as prime minister after a narrow 60-59 vote in parliament. He will hold office until September 2023 according to the power sharing agreement involving the coalition of eight parties.
Then he will hand over to the leader of the Yesh Atid party, Yair Lapid who will lead for another two years.
Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, remains the head of the largest party in parliament and is expected to vigorously oppose the new government.
Netanyahu was present in the parliament during the voting. After the vote was approved, he shook Bennett hand and briefly sat on the opposition chair before leaving the parliament.
