The UK government has imposed an unprecedented “emergency brake” on study visas for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, effective immediately for new applications.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the move on March 3, 2026, also suspending skilled work visas for Afghans.
The Home Office cited a sharp surge in asylum claims from students entering via legal routes: applications from these four countries rose over 470% between 2021 and September 2025, with nearly 95% of Afghan study visa holders claiming asylum since 2021, and similar spikes from the others.
“Britain will always provide refuge to people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused,” Mahmood stated.
Changes will be formalized in Immigration Rules on March 5, with full effect by March 26. The suspension can last up to 12 months while risks are reviewed.
This targeted measure does not affect study visas for applicants from other countries, including Nigeria.
The general Student visa route remains open, subject to standard requirements like a CAS, funds proof, and English proficiency.
The policy aligns with broader UK efforts to curb net migration and asylum system pressures.
