At least 40 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a “terrorist attack” in Moscow.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Friday that the attack happen at the Crocus City Hall shopping mall and concert complex.
“Fire and rescue units are operating … Their main efforts are aimed at search and rescue. Firefighters evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building. Work is underway to rescue others from the roof using lifts,” a message from the Ministry of Emergency Situations says.
Sputnik correspondent at the scene reported that at least three people in camouflage opened fire at the venue. “After that, the gunmen threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb which started a fire,” the correspondent added.
“People in the hall laid down on the ground to avoid the fire, laying there for about 15-20 minutes, after which they began to crawl out. Many managed to get out,” the correspondent said.
The attackers struck the venue, situated at one end of the sprawling complex in Moscow Region, just before a concert by the rock band “Picnic.” The concert scheduled for Friday evening was sold out.
Members of the musical group Piknik, at whose concert the shooting occurred, were not injured.
Crocus City comprises a concert hall, an aquarium, and a wedding venue as well as a retail mall featuring multiple shops and restaurants.
Local media is reporting that up to 6,200 people could have been in the building when the shooting started.
The United States of America has condemned the terrorist attack in Moscow. Speaking to reporters at a briefing in Washington, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the White House sent condolences to the victims of the “terrible” attack.
Kirby quickly dismissed any speculation about a potential “connection to Ukraine,” saying there is “no indication” that Ukrainians were involved.
