The Enugu State government has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to facilitate the safe return, resettlement, and reintegration of irregular and stranded migrants from the state.
Additionally, the government aims to assist the IOM in establishing a zonal office in Enugu to directly facilitate the return and rehabilitation of such individuals within the state.
The government also plans to provide social programs to equip returnees with skills for sustainable livelihoods.
During a meeting with a delegation from the IOM, led by the Chief of Mission, Laurent De Boeck, Governor Peter Mbah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with the IOM.
He emphasized the importance of integrating returnees into their home state and highlighted the state’s readiness to engage with the diaspora for mutual benefit.
De Boeck, the IOM Chief of Mission, commended the Enugu State government for its efforts to engage successful Nigerians in the diaspora and assured of the organization’s support in this regard.
He also mentioned the IOM’s strategy to discourage irregular migration and create opportunities for safe and dignified migration abroad.
