The Federal Ministry of Education has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the activities of private and foreign universities in Nigeria.
The committee members include the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Minister of Youth, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar.
One of the committee’s terms of reference is to investigate private universities established in the last 15 years, examining their facilities, management structure, funding of programs, and staff composition.
There are currently 147 private universities in Nigeria, with 107 of them established in the last 15 years.
Without prejudice to the periodic accreditation exercise of the NUC, examine whether or not private universities established in the last 15 years have in place prescribed facilities, appropriate management structure, adequate funding of programmes, requisite staff (nature of staff-full time, contract, adjunct, visiting, other types),the term of reference read.
