The National Economic Council (NEC) says that only 16 states out of the 36 in the federation has submitted reports for the creation state police.

All 36 state governors have expressed their support for state police, but only 16 of them submitted reports expressing their supports.
The states submitted the reports at the 140th NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja on Thursday.
Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha made the revelation in a statement released after the meeting.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima described the response from the states as unimpressive, however, the statement did not disclose the states that sent in their reports.
The states recommends changes in the constitution and current policing structure so as to enable the operationalization of of the initiative.

He urged the states yet to make inputs to expedite action to enable robust deliberations on the subject matter at the next council meeting.
On February 15, the federal government set up a committee to explore the creation of state police in the country.
NEC was established by the provisions of section 153(1) and Paragraphs 18 & 19 of part I of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Its membership comprises the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank and other co-opted government officials.
Chaired by the Vice President, NEC meets monthly to execute its mandate of “advising the President concerning the economic affairs of the Federation, and in particular on measures necessary for the coordination of the economic planning efforts or economic programmes of the various Governments of the Federation.”
