PPresident Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed South Africa’s interest in collaborating with Nigeria to harness lithium to drive the green energy transition and support the development of electric vehicles (EV) batteries, during the Nigeria-South Africa Business Roundtable in Cape Town.
He noted that Nigeria’s extensive lithium reserves could be pivotal for industrialization in the EV sector. Ramaphosa urged collaboration between the private sector and development finance institutions to enhance infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities.
“In addition, there are significant opportunities for cooperation in pharmaceuticals. Both countries are well-positioned to benefit from the growth of clean energy manufacturing industries,” he stated. Ramaphosa also expressed South Africa’s support for Nigeria’s bid to join the G20, which includes the world’s major economies.
This commitment came during the inauguration of South Africa’s G20 presidency and his meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
He reiterated that South Africa and the African Union are the only African representatives in the G20 and emphasized the need for more African countries to be included to amplify the continent’s voice. Ramaphosa concluded by asserting that Africa will play a significant role in global growth and must be recognized in the G20.
