The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has acquired the equipment to establish 40 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations nationwide. Additionally, the Federal Government plans to launch about 100 CNG stations within the next six months.
Oluwagbemi Michael, the CEO of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, shared this update with The PUNCH during an event in Ogun State.
He noted that the NNPC has set up 12 CNG centers in the past year, including six in Abuja and six in Lagos. Michael mentioned ongoing complaints about the limited number of CNG stations, which has hindered its acceptance as an alternative fuel to petrol.
He highlighted that a recent release of funds, approximately N122 billion, will support six private organizations investing in CNG distribution. Over the past year, CNG refueling stations have increased from around 13 to 50, with a target to double that number in the next six months.
The government is also distributing one million CNG conversion kits to commercial drivers, which will create significant demand for CNG. Michael confirmed that existing filling stations could be upgraded to include CNG refilling options, and NNPC is working on 40 such add-ons to be operational next year.
He also mentioned a credit scheme for vehicle conversions, making it easier for individuals to convert petrol vehicles to CNG and benefit from lower fuel costs. By saving money on fuel, they can more easily afford the conversion over time.
