The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive stating that henceforth, “no operative should be seen carrying assault weapons (rifles) while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).”
He also delivered a stern warning to all officers regarding serious breaches of human rights, emphasizing the police force’s duty to uphold these rights. In a virtual meeting with strategic police managers yesterday, Egbetokun expressed concern over reports of human rights violations received through the Force’s complaint channels. According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, the meeting aimed to reinforce operational integrity and ensure effective management within the Nigeria Police Force.
During this critical session, the IGP addressed several pressing issues to enhance the ethical and professional conduct of police personnel nationwide. He stated that any conduct violating human rights will not be tolerated and will face severe consequences. Furthermore, the IGP urged all tactical squads to avoid misuse of power and improper attire, highlighting the importance of operating in approved uniforms. He reiterated that no operative should carry assault weapons (rifles) while dressed in civilian clothing.
Additionally, all tactical squads are required to comply with the standard operating procedures while wearing the assigned uniforms specific to their units. The IGP also emphasized that the indiscriminate transfer of cases without his written approval is strictly prohibited, as it imposes unnecessary burdens on the parties involved and leads to delays in justice. In conclusion, the IGP instructed all ranks to work collaboratively to prevent any irresponsible actions that could tarnish the reputation of the Force.
