The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stated that he became governor without the backing of a godfather, during a visit to Fashola Farm in Oyo Town on Friday, he addressed reporters, stating that speculation about his political future is unnecessary and uninvited.
Makinde emphasized that he is capable of speaking for himself on any issue without fear or intimidation, adding that he would make any public announcements regarding his political ambitions when the time is right.
He said, “We didn’t host the PDP reporters’ retreat because someone has a presidential ambition. No comments, nothing. But all I can say is that I am old enough to declare my intentions when I wish.” He continued, “No speculation, and nobody can push my agenda.
I will push my agenda when the time comes.” Reflecting on his political journey, Makinde recounted how he overcame various challenges, including two unsuccessful attempts to secure a Senate seat before being elected as Governor. He explained, “The people of Oyo State made a decision in 2019. I didn’t have a godfather, nor was I sponsored; nobody gave me funds to get here.
The people chose to give this opportunity to someone outside the traditional political structure.” He added, “Before my election, there were doubts about my capabilities—people asked, ‘What has Seyi done before? Has he been a councillor? A member of the House of Representatives? I tried for the Senate twice but was rejected.’
My political experience was limited, but I had success in business, and the people decided to give me a chance. “At that time, the entire South-West was dominated by the APC, consisting of six states.
However, in Oyo State, we chose to be different. Due to my lack of experience, I aimed to convince the electorate. We prepared a document titled ‘Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019–2023,’ and I told the people, ‘This is it in black and white; hold me accountable.’
Thankfully, my administration is making progress.” Additionally, the governor warned against allowing Nigeria to become a one-party state. He said, “Nigeria must not slide into a one-party system, as it would prevent others from showcasing their talents.”
