Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, has filed a $5,000,000 lawsuit in a Lagos High Court against Meta Platforms Inc., claiming an invasion of his privacy.
The lawsuit alleges that the company published a video titled “AfriCare Health Center” on its platform—www.facebook.com—falsely stating that Falana suffers from the disease ‘Prostatitis,’ which he argues is misleading and violates his privacy rights under Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Falana, represented by his lawyer Olumide Babalola, seeks a court declaration that the respondents’ continuation of this publication is an unlawful invasion of his privacy. He also requests an order for the removal and deletion of the video and is seeking $5,000,000 in damages for the emotional distress caused by the false claims. In an affidavit, Falana emphasized his reputation for fearless legal advocacy and noted that he has never had any health issues related to ‘Prostatitis.’
He argues that the published video, which inaccurately represents his health status, has severely harmed his image and caused him significant emotional distress.
