Facebook’s entire network including WhatsApp and Instagram suddenly went offline Monday evening, just as the company defends itself against a whistleblower’s accusation and its handling of research data which suggests that Instagram is harmful to teens.
This is the worst outage suffered by the social media giant since 2008, when it was knocked offline for about a day by a bug.
The company is yet to offer explanation for an outage that have lasted over 5 hours, or as to when the network will be restored.
However, Facebook’s said in a tweet “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

The cause of the outage appears to be an internal problem according to Reuters, adding that outside hack was viewed as less likely.
Following the outage, Facebook shares fell 4.89% at the close on trading on Monday.
