More than 60,000 people watched the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi’s presentation at the Chatham House in London on Monday.
He spoke on the topic, ‘Nigeria’s 2023 elections: A vision for policy change and institutional reforms.’
The former Anambra State governor said he would ensure social justice which will discourage social unrest and criminality. He also said that he would revamp the already impoverished Nigeria’s economy, fight insecurity and corruption, and place the country on the path of rapid economic growth and recovery, adding that he would ensure borrowing in future would only be for investment.
“The ethnic tension you see today is a result of injustice, unfairness, exclusion and marginalization; immediately we start reversing that, they (ethnic tensions) start going down. This is what I tell you about agitations, as long as we start doing the right things, as soon as we start building an inclusive society where people’s talent and hard work will match up their opportunities, you will start seeing those things go down. There is tension even in the western world. We will show compassion; we will show love,” Obi said.
Obi also said he will address all the issues of agitations if elected President of Nigeria, when asked how he will address the issue of agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) during the question and answer session.
“I condemn all agitators. But in condemning them, you have to look at why all these agitators are all over the place including IPOB, the Yoruba Nation.”
He said 63% of Nigerians are in massive poverty, which is fueling the agitations in Nigeria.
Recall that Obi’s counterpart in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, on December 5, 2022, appeared at Chatham House in London, where he revealed some of his plans for major sectors like defense, economy, education, and technology.
During his appearance, Tinubu drew widespread criticism after he delegated some of his allies including serving governors and lawmakers to answer questions posed at him by participants at the event.
