A 39-year old woman from Utah, United States with no known health conditions, has died four days after receiving her second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, according to a Wednesday report that investigated vaccine side effects.
Kassidi Kurill, who took the second dose on Monday, February 1 died by the evening of Friday, February 5 2021, after complaining to her parents that “her heart was racing and she felt like she needed to get to the emergency room.”
“She was seemingly healthy as a horse,” Kurill’s father, Alfred Hawley who has also been vaccinated, told Fox News. “She had no known underlying condition…”
Kassidy, mother-of-one received the vaccine due to her role as a surgical technician for several plastic surgeons in Utah and did so “without hesitation”, according to her family.

She did not suffer any noticeable side effects after her first dose of the Moderna Vaccine, except an inevitable sore arm. However, after the second shot on February 1, Hawley said she “got sick right away, soreness at the shot location, then started getting sick, then started complaining that she was drinking lots of fluids but couldn’t pee and then felt a little better the next day.”
Kurill was taken to the emergency room by her father. “They did a blood test and immediately came back and said she was very-very sick, and her liver was not functioning,” Hawley said. She was transferred to the Trauma Center in Murray for a liver transplant on Thursday evening.
Her condition deteriorated as doctors tried repeatedly to stabilize her for a liver transplant and by Friday morning she could no longer talk.
“They were trying to get her to a point where she was stable enough for a liver transplant. And they just could not get her stable,” Hawley said. “She got worse and worse throughout the day. And at nine o’clock, she passed.” Her autopsy report is still pending according to her father.
Although some side effects from the vaccine are common, resulting deaths are rare.
About 92 million COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in the U.S. between December 14, 2020 and March 8, 2021 according to the U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
Out of the 92 million, VAERS has received 1,637 reports of death (0.0018%) among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine.
“To date, VAERS has not detected patterns in cause of death that would indicate a safety problem with COVID-19 vaccines,” the CDC says on its website.
It said that “results from monitoring efforts are reassuring. Some people have no side effects. Many people have reported only mild side effects after COVID-19 vaccination.
