On June 6, 2024, the Senate passed a bill prohibiting Nigerian athletes from using performance-enhancing substances during or after sporting events.
President Bola Tinubu had requested the Senate to enact this bill in May, and the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, read the President’s letter on the Senate floor.
The bill, titled “National Anti-Doping Bill 2024,” aims to establish a legal framework for the National Anti-Doping Organisation in Nigeria. President Tinubu stated that the bill was essential to enforce the international convention against doping in sports, especially with the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in France.
The bill’s passage came after the Senate committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters reviewed and approved the report, presented by Senator Mohammed Monguno.
The Senate approved the bill to be read for a third time, and it passed through a voice vote led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary.
