In recent months, there has been ongoing conflict between Shaibu and Obaseki regarding the governorship election in the state.
The 54-year-old politician expressed his concerns during an interview on Friday, just two days after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his reinstatement as deputy governor.
He stated, “Yesterday, I received information that the governor has instructed his supporters to prevent me from entering town. As a native of Edo State, nobody can stop me from entering.
The constitution does not permit anyone to bar me from entering Edo State, even as a deputy governor. As an ordinary citizen, I should have the right and freedom to do so.” Shaibu also recalled the governor’s alleged threat to destroy him when he declared his intention to run for the governorship ticket under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in November 2023.
Despite this, Shaibu, a devout Catholic, emphasized that only God can destroy a man. He pledged to continue fighting throughout the election period leading up to the September 21 governorship election.
Furthermore, Shaibu accused the governor of orchestrating the attack in Benin City on Thursday, asserting that it was in line with the governor’s earlier promise to destroy him.
Shaibu expressed sorrow for the police inspector who was killed during the attack on his convoy and the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, in Benin City by suspected gunmen.
He also commented on the destruction of the institution of the deputy governor’s office, claiming that he has not received payment for the past year and does not anticipate payment for the remaining four months.
Shaibu emphasized the importance of preserving the institution of the office of the deputy governor and stated that his fight to do so is not for personal gain but to restore its integrity.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, has denied the allegation that Governor Godwin Obaseki planned the attack.
He noted that the thugs who shot at people and killed the police inspector were mobilized by Shaibu.
He said they were supporters and thugs who were at the airport to welcome their boss. Nehikhare said, “The accusation is nonsense.
How can Shaibu say that the governor planned the attack against him? It is his thugs who he mobilized that were shooting sporadically and killed the policeman.
Having realized the enormity of what has happened, he is now running around to clear his name. But we all know that his thugs were the ones who carried out the attack.”
“He was the one who ignored the plea by the CP to remain calm due to the appeal and stay of judgment execution which the government got.
We have videos of his thugs causing mayhem in the city on Thursday, and he should be made to answer for his deeds.”
