The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has offered a N2 million reward for information leading to the apprehension of Anambra-based lawyer, Adachukwu Chukelu-Okafor, who is accused of abusing her 10-year-old house help.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the minister emphasized her right to intervene in matters concerning women and children in the country.
The alleged abuse took place in the Onitsha North Local Government of Anambra State, where Chukelu-Okafor reportedly used objects such as a broken bottle, knife, and electric iron to harm the child in response to an incident involving her daughter.
A video circulating online shows the house help covered in burns allegedly inflicted by Chukelu-Okafor. The minister expressed frustration at the lack of resolution in the case, stating, “I am not going to listen anymore. I am going to wage into any issue that concerns women and children across this country”.
She urged Nigerians to help locate and hand over Chukelu-Okafor to the police, announcing the N2 million reward offered by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for her capture.
Kennedy-Ohanenye also revealed plans to address the employment of minors as domestic workers and called for whistleblowers to step forward and support the governments efforts to address such issues.
The ministers firm stance on the matter indicates the governments commitment to addressing abuses against women and children, and she encouraged citizens to take an active role in reporting such incidents.
