In a significant development affecting Nigeria’s security landscape, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has resigned from his position, effective immediately.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the resignation on February 24, 2026, and swiftly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commonly known as Tunji Disu, as the Acting IGP.
The formal handover ceremony took place on February 25, 2026, at the IGP Conference Hall in the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
This event marked the end of Egbetokun’s tenure and the start of a new chapter for the Nigeria Police Force.
Credible reports from Premium Times, Punch, and other sources indicate that Egbetokun’s resignation followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa on the previous Monday evening, during which he was asked to step down.
Egbetokun’s tenure began in June 2023, initially as acting IGP and later confirmed with a four-year extension until June 2027. His leadership faced ongoing criticism regarding its effectiveness in addressing insecurity and raised questions about its legitimacy.
Egbetokun formally handed over his responsibilities to AIG Tunji Disu, who has been appointed as Acting IGP effective immediately.
Disu, a 59-year-old Lagos-born officer with extensive experience in intelligence and investigations—having previously headed the FCID Annex in Lagos—takes office 48 days before his scheduled retirement.
This leadership change may lead to retirements among several senior officers, including some Deputy Inspectors-General, due to shifts in hierarchy.
As Acting IGP, Disu now faces several critical challenges: enhancing security in the lead-up to future elections, rebuilding public trust, and pursuing necessary reforms.
