Chief Atinuke Oyelude, on Friday celebrated her her ninety-third birthday.
The Chief made history in 1957 when she won the title of Miss Nigeria for the first time. Grace Atinuke, who was raised in Northern Nigeria, was selected to represent the area after her brother gave Daily Times, the pageant’s organizers, Grace’s photo.
Back then, winners were selected from among the photographs they had submitted.
After winning, she quickly disappeared from the public eye, taking the £200 cash prize to go to nursing school in England.
She was awarded the titles Iyaolu of Isaluland and Iyalode of Okunland when she became a nurse.
In 2015, she received a Peugeot from the Miss Nigeria organization and the celebration of her birthday has always been observed.
This year, the organisation in an Instagram post said, “We are immensely delighted to celebrate the evergreen beauty and brave leader, Chief Grace Atinuke Oyelude, on the occasion of her 93rd birthday.”
“Her courage, resolve, and great strength of character are excellent qualities that have endeared her to us and many others.
“Happy birthday once again, to the very first Miss Nigeria, Chief Grace Atinuke Oyelude.
“Thank you for pavering the way and setting the standards that all Miss Nigeria Queens walk through as well as your priceless contributions towards women empowerment.”
