Raheem Sterling’s first goal at a major tournament was all England needed to see off Croatia at Wembley as they kick-start their Euro 2020 campaign.
This is also ground breaking as England broke the jinx of never winning their opening game at a European Championship.
England took their pound of flesh off Croatia who eliminated them in the semi-final at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions waited till the 57th minute for Sterling to put England ahead, after Phil Foden struck the woodwork in the 6th minute. Harry Kane had the opportunity to double England’s lead but squandered the chance, though the blunt Croatian attack could not punish this wasteful moment by the English point man.
With this victory, England remain unbeaten in 12 games at Wembley at major tournaments, winning eight and drawing four of those matches.
Croatia has also lost eight of their 14 games in all competitions since the start of 2020’
England will meet Scotland on Friday, in the first meeting of the two nations in a major competition since Euro 1996, while Croatia will take on the Czech Republic in their next match.
