The Governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi, has tested positive for Covid-19 according to the statement signed on Saturday by the governor.
Umahi, also confirmed that some of his aides have tested positive for the virus. He said that they are asymptomatic and are self-isolating. Ebonyi state has recorded 438 cases of the virus with 357 recoveries and 3 deaths.
Umahi directed his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, to take over the administration of the state. He also urged the state residents to follow the precautions advised by the health authorities in order to curtail the spread of the virus.
His announcement has made him the sixth governor to contract the virus in Nigeria.
On 30 June, the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, became the fifth governor to test positive for Covid-19.
Other governors are; Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and the former Governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi who died after contracting the virus.

Total of 27,564 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Nigeria as at Friday 3 July, with 11,069 recoveries and 628 deaths. On Friday Nigeria recorded 454 news cases with 12 persons losing their lives to the virus.
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, on Sunday, ordered the immediate closure of a private hospital, where the first coronavirus-related death in the state took place.
According to the governor, closure of the hospital would serve as a deterrent to other hospitals that might attempt to manage COVID-19 patients without adherence to the NCDC protocols.
Earlier in June, government offices were shut in Ebonyi state as officials test positive for Covid-19. A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Uchenna Orji, hinted that some members of the State Executive Council had contracted the virus.
