The Presidential Election Petition Court has adjourned, the petition by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi against the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as President-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to Wednesday, May 17.
The court took the decision on the request for adjournment by parties to the petition.
The court was informed by Peter Obi’s attorney, Livy Uzoukwu, that he and the attorneys for INEC, Tinubu, and Shettima had decided to postpone today’s pre-hearing session until next Wednesday, May 17, because so many other documents still needed to be filed.
“My Lords, we met and agreed that the matter should be adjourned till next week Wednesday, so that when we are coming back, we will be sure that the processes are ripe for hearing,” Uzoukwu said.
“We also agreed that before then, we will meet and take decision on documents that are not in contention and documents that are controversial,” he added.
The legal counsel for INEC, Tinubu, and Shettima acknowledged that such a consensus had been reached.
The Justice Haruna Tsammani-led five-member panel acceded to the adjournment request after listening to all parties.
The court directed the parties to identify core issues to be determined in the petition.
The tribunal had on Tuesday adjourned the petition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to Thursday, May 11.
