Today, I want to talk about wellness and most importantly, mental wellness with the term ” Mind over Matter”. I’d like to start with one of my favorite quotes.. “Securing the bag is necessary, but taking care of her health & wellness is priority.”
I am an author, a fitness and wellness coach. I am devoted to inspiring and encouraging people to lead a healthier and happier life and I hope what I’m about to share here would encourage someone today to prioritize their wellbeing more than anything.
The term wellness has been applied in many ways. It is much more than just physical health, exercise, and nutrition. Wellness is multidimensional including: Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Career, Intellectual, Environmental, Social. Wellness is a full integration and the pursuit of continued growth and balance in these seven dimensions of wellness.

Each dimension contributes to our own sense of wellness or quality of life, and each affects and overlaps the others. At times, one may be more prominent than others, but neglect of any one dimension for any length of time has adverse effects on overall health;
- Spiritual
- Physical
- Emotional
- Career
- Intellectual
- Environmental
- Social
Everyone will find happiness through wellness with a slightly different approach.
And like I always tell people that no matter how sexy your body is, how much money you have, how pretty/handsome or successful you are, none of it matters if your mind isn’t right. Healthy doesn’t mean a salad or a measure of weight.
Being healthy involves your mind, spirit, and heart just as much as your body. Having a healthy mind is just as important as having a healthy body. With healthy mind comes a healthy body.
Most times we are all so busy pretending our life is great, like really…that there’s little form of therapeutic release for the real issues on our minds. We have to look rich, our career has to be going well, we have to look happy when in relationship, or pretend we are independent and living life, if single.
No one wants to talk about their arguments or insecurities or how sad or lonely they feel. Surely are all these pressures some of the many reasons why some of us are not happy as we should be?
Put your life into perspective. Figure out what is weighing you down. Is it work? If so, is it time to look at new path? Is it relationship? If so, is it time to walk away from it? Is it friends?
One thing I have learnt about friendship is, If it brings you anything but happiness, you need to cut it off and walk away. Toxic people are like cancer. They will get inside you and spread until you become as toxic as they are, until they take away your happiness from you for whatever reason.
It might be to knock your confidence because they are insecure. It might be because they are unhappy and your happiness sickens them. Whatever reason, identify those persons and remove them from your life. You’ll thank yourself later.
A relationship is meant to make you happy. Friends are meant to be people you can lean on. Family is meant to be the one thing above all others that you can rely on when you need help. If they aren’t fulfilling those roles in your life, they probably need to be given a wide berth.
Below are tips to help you achieve a healthy mind:
- Identify the cause of your unhappiness. If it is something within your control, try to change it.
- Be thankful. One thing I have tried to do recently is to count my blessings. Even though sometimes that selfish little gremlin peaks on the shoulder and tell me to throw tantrum, have a melt down and complain. But consciously I try to avoid it. Write a list of all the things you are lucky to have; it might be materialistic; It might be more about the people around you and good health. “Count your blessings”.. Gratitude is the key to a higher mental altitude.
- Some times distract yourself, figure out what works as good distraction technique for you. It might be a hobby(cooking, painting, or writing etc). Treat yourself and make sure you have something to look forward to. Don’t forget to LIVE just because you’re so busy living everyday moment of dull, repetitive, habitual life.
- Don’t compare yourself to others. Set your own goals, aims, give yourself something to work towards. These make you more focused and get you out of bed on a positive note.
- Finally, surround yourself with positive people, people who do positive things and inspire you to do better. If you are around complacent people, you become complacent with time. When you’re around negative people, you soon become negative. Keep a few real friends around; it makes life that little bit easier.
Your mind is in control of your body, not the other way round. Bottom line is: your thoughts are in control of your overall wellbeing, not the chemical imbalance. They are only the Manifestation of your thoughts. If you want to bring certain things into your life, you’ll have to first possess them on the inside. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world.
So if you want to have more power, you must first feel powerful. If you want better health, you have to first think healthy. If you want to be happier, you have to think happier. I am not a motivational speaker. This is as much for me as it is for you…sometimes we need a little reminder of all the great things in life!
…Here is to living well and being well from this moment forward…wellness first!
