46 migrants found dead in a trailer in the U.S.

At least 46 migrants were found dead in a tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday, the deadliest smuggling incident of its kind in U.S. history.

16 people including 4 minors were pulled from the truck alive by rescuers, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told reporters. Those rescued were taken for medical treatment.

The horrific incident comes amid a record influx of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. The discovery is part of what is believed to be a human smuggling operation.

Three people have been taken into police custody, authorities said.

“This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said Monday night near the location where the tractor-trailer was found.

“The plight of migrants seeking refuge is always a humanitarian crisis but tonight we are dealing with a horrific human tragedy,” the mayor added.

“We hope those responsible for putting these people in such inhumane conditions are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the mayor said.

San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said the authorieties were notified about the trailer a nearby worker.

“This is now a federal investigation,” McManus said. The police chief also said at least three people were in custody but did not specify if the individuals were suspects in the investigation.
