After Match Day 6, the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament shows the following results.
Wednesday 16 June
Group B: Finland 0-1 Russia (St Petersburg)
Group A: Turkey 0-2 Wales (Baku)
Group A: Italy 3-0 Switzerland (Rome)
Wales are on the verge of qualifying from the group after a convincing performance against Turkey. Despite missing a penalty, Gareth Bale showed class and leadership as the Dragons’ Captain was all over the pitch which culminated in him providing two assists for Aaron Ramsey (42’) and Connor Roberts (90’+5) to end Turkey’s journey in the tournament with a 2-0 win. Switzerland’s hope of qualifying from the group dangles on a cliff-hanger as they will need to beat Turkey in Baku while hoping that Italy beats Wales convincingly in Rome. Both matches will be played simultaneously by 5pm on Sunday, June 20.
Italy became the first team to have qualified for the knock-out stages with a blistering 3-0 win against Switzerland. Despite influential captain, Georgio Chiellini, leaving the pitch (due to injury) just five minutes after his 19th minute goal was disallowed, the Italian team continues to prove they are one of the tournament’s favourites. Sassuolo would have a handful of suitors for their midfielder, Manuel Locatelli, who continues to marshal the Azzurri midfield with finesse, command and direction. He iced a good game with two goals, while Ciro Immobile completed the 3-0 rout on Switzerland.
The only match in group B saw Finland testing their first defeat as they lost 0-1 to Russia. Having lost their first match to Belgium, Russia came back to winning ways and consequently on course to qualifying for the next round. The group will be taking better shape tonight after the match between Belgium and ‘wounded’ Denmark. Will the Danes play for Christian Eriksen against a compact Belgian team that has influential Man City midfielder, Kevin de Brune, coming back? Only 90 minutes can determine that.
