A young man identified as Onoh Chukwuma Richard reportedly took his own life in Abia state on Tuesday by consuming insecticide for allegedly losing N2.5m to betting over the weekend.
It was reported that Onoh who hails from Arochukwu Local Government Area could not bear the shame and pressure from those he borrowed money for the betting.
Onoh, had posted on his Facebook wall that it was his last day on earth and that he was going to meet his maker.
He wrote: “Today is my last day on earth! I’m going to meet my maker. Thank you Chima Anyaso, Ikukuoma Abia, Kelvin Jombo Onumah, Ekwueme Ohafia, and my friends. My spirit is with you all.”
A screenshot of WhatsApp message Onoh sent to his friend circulating online showed that Onoh had borrowed N1.2 million to play the N2.5 million.
He was rushed to Madonna Hospital, Umuahia by friends but he did not survive.
A Facebook user, Ibeako Esther Chisom, wrote, “Onoh Chukwuma Richard, I am heartbroken. I watched the doctors and nurses giving you pressure to see if you can come back but all proved abortive and your pause dropped as the doctor confirmed you dead right in front of me and other of your friends.
“Onoh Chukwuma Richard, you really cut down the plans God has for you by taking your life by yourself. Sleep on. I am heartbroken.”
Friends have taken to his Facebook page to send condolences with many questioning his decision to take his own life.
Another Facebook user Hycenth Ndubuisi questioned why he would take his life for N2.5 million.
He wrote “Guy while did you take your life just because you lose 2.5m bet it’s well rip.”
Another user, Obika James Abuchi, wrote, “U had 1m and borrowed 1.5m to play bet, it failed, cuz of the shame from debtors you took your life? Onoh who taught you this? ”
